From the start of next season the Chester and District Football League will have a new title. The League originally made an application for the word “Wirral” to be included in it’s name, mainly to reflect that Wirral and Ellesmere Port clubs now form 50% of it’s membership. Cheshire County FA initially rejected this proposal, but the League management committee decided to appeal directly to the Football Association. Last week a League delegation attended an appeals hearing at Wembley Stadium, where the FA panel unanimously upheld CDFL’s appeal. It further sanctioned that the new title should be Chester & Wirral Football League as from the start of the 2015/2016 season. Three days later, at the League’s AGM, this was confirmed overwhelmingly by the clubs, officers and members.
“Apart from giving our clubs from Wirral a greater sense of belonging, this decision will assist the League further in reversing the downward trend in Saturday afternoon football at grass-roots level. There have already been tangible benefits brought to us by our neighbours, not least the improved standard of football and competitiveness. The 121 year old reputation and tradition of the league will carry on as normal”, says League Secretary Paul Graham.
There will now be a rebranding of the league logo etc. with new website and documentation. We anticipate that this will take us a few weeks until everything is in place.
It is with the deepest regret that the CDFL inform you of the sad passing of Doug Johnson.
Doug has been a member of the CDFL since 1964 and has held most offices within the league, with his last stint as Secretary covering 2000-2002. His devotion to local football and his service to the game was truly exceptional.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
The CDFL are currently accepting applications for new teams to join the CDFL for the 2015-2016 season. Interested parties should contact League Secretary Paul Graham via e-mail to pgraham114@aol.com for further details or on 07891 537116.
